Have you ever wanted a secret place to hold your most special treasures?  How about keeping them in your very own treasure necklace?  This necklace is fun and easy to make with an old film canister (and a little bit of adult supervision!).

Things 005Things you will need:

  • White or colored paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Beads
  • Tape
  • A film canister
  • A pencil

Things 006Step 1: Have an adult poke a hole on either side of the film canister, making sure they line up.

Things 009Step 2: Trace a strip of paper that just fits around your film canister and cut it out.  If it is too long or too wide you can always cut away the excess once you tape it to the film canister.

Things 010Step 3: Decorate your paper with markers, crayons or other things.

Things 011Step 4: Cut a piece of string in the color of your choice.  It should be long enough to go around your neck as a necklace with a little extra for tying it to the film canister.

Things 013Step 5: Tie the sting to one of the holes on the film canister and begin threading your beads.  Thread all of the beads you want for both sides of the necklace before you tie off the other end of your string.  Remember if you want the colors of the beads to match on both sides you must thread the second set of beads opposite the first.  So if you want each side to be red–green–yellow you would need to thread the beads like this: red–green–yellow–yellow–green–red and so on.  Once you have threaded the beads tie the string to the other hole and shift your beads around to each side of the necklace.

Things 015Step 6: Tape the paper around your film canister and trim any excess paper away.

Things 018Congratulations!  You now have a treasure necklace for storing all of your special treasures.  Simply remove the canister’s lid and place your small treasures inside.  Recap it and wear it around you neck holding the treasures close!  Did you do this project?  Did you do it differently?  Please feel free to comment and post pictures in the comments section!
