Now you can show off your favorite picture with this “You’re a STAR!” foam photo frame.  This advanced beginner project teaches measuring, cutting and handwriting skills.

Things you will need:

  • Yellow and blue foam sheets (or the colors of your choice)
  • Orange puffy paint (or the color of your choice)
  • Scissors
  • A pencil
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • A ruler
  • Yellow yarn (or the color of your choice)
  • A picture of you

Step 1: Using your ruler, measure a blue foam square that is larger than your picture.  For this project my square is 6″x6″.  Carefully cut the square out making sure the lines are even.

Step 2: Place your picture in the center of the square and use your ruler to trace around it. Cut out this center square and make sure your lines are even.  It is better to make the square too small than too large because you don’t want a space between the foam and the picture.

Step 3: Use your ruler for an even measurement and make a pencil mark 1″ in on each side of the top of the frame.  Using your scissors, cut a length of string for the hanger.

Step 4: Use your pencil to poke both of the holes.  Thread the ends of your string through the holes and tie them off.  Make sure that the ends face the backside of the frame.

Step 5: Draw and cut out four stars from the yellow foam.

Step 6: Glue a star to each corner of the frame.

Step 7: Using the puffy paint write “You’re a STAR!” on the frame.  It helps if you write everything out in pencil first to use as a guide.  Finally, tape your picture to the back of your frame.

Congratulations!  You’ve made a fun foam frame!  Use it to display your favorite picture for everyone to see.  This project can also be made into a magnet if you omit the yarn and replace it with peel and stick magnets.  Simply skip steps three and four and place magnets on the back of the frame instead.  Did you do this project differently?  Please feel free to share your comments and pictures in the comments section!
