Halloween is fast approaching so get in the spirit with these super easy and cute pom pom pumpkins!  The tying and cutting makes this an advanced beginner project but wrapping the yarn around the cardboard is great for tuning fine motor skills.

Things you will need:

  • A piece of scrap cardboard about 4 inches big
  • Scissors
  • Orange yarn
  • Green chenille sticks

Step 1: Continuously wrap the orange yarn around the cardboard until it becomes thick (about 50-75 times).

Step 2: Cut the yarn and tuck the “tails” (both ends) of the yarn under the wrapped pieces.  Additionally, cut a piece of yarn (about 6 inches) for tying.

Step 3: Lay the piece of tying yarn flat on the table.  Bend your piece of cardboard and slide it out from the middle of the wrapped yarn.  Carefully place your wrapped yarn over the piece of tying yarn.  Make sure the tying yarn is centered in the middle of your wrapped yarn (see picture).

Step 4: Take your tying yarn and begin to tie a knot.  Before you tie the knot, slip a chenille stick through the yarn.  Pull the string tight and tie several knots to make it secure.

Step 5: Slip your scissors through the loops on one side and snip.  Repeat on the other side.  This will make the shape of the pom pom.

Step 6: Trim the strings to shorten them and fluff the pom pom so that it takes a nice round shape.  Then carefully trim the chenille stick so that it is proportionate to the pom pom.  Curl one side around your finger or a pencil and bend the other to look like a stem.

Congratulations!  You have made a pumpkin pom pom!  Use it as a decoration or hang it from the zipper on your jacket to make a fun Halloween zipper pull.  You can make a whole pom pom pumpkin patch by making larger and smaller pom poms.  Simply cut a larger or smaller piece of cardboard for wrapping.  Did you do this project?  How did it turn out?  Please feel free to post your comments and pictures in the comments section.  Happy crafting!
