Homemade party poppers

Posted on: December 16, 2010

Celebrate the season with these festive homemade party poppers!  They are super simple to make and are a great addition to your holiday table or for use as present toppers.  It’s an advanced beginner project because it requires the use of scissors for curling ribbon.  If you omit the curling of the ribbon this is a beginner project.

Things you will need:

  • Toilet paper rolls (one for each popper)
  • Tissue paper
  • Construction paper (optional)
  • Hole punch (optional)
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Crayons
  • Fillers including stickers, candies, small toys, etc.

Step 1: Lay a toilet paper roll on a piece of tissue paper two layers thick.  Position it and cut the paper so that there are about three inches on each side of the toilet paper roll.

Step 2: Center the toilet paper roll on the tissue paper and tape them together.

Step 3: Roll the tissue paper completely around the toilet paper roll and secure with tape.  Cut two pieces of ribbon for tying off the ends of the popper.

Step 4: Carefully tie off one end of the party popper.  Select a few trinkets, candies, etc. and slip them inside the open end of the popper.

Step 5 (optional): Use a hole punch to punch circles of construction paper.  This can be used as confetti inside the party popper.

Step 6: Tie off the other end of the popper and curl the ribbon (optional).  Use crayons to decorate the popper and add things such as the name of the popper’s recipient.

Congratulations!  You have made a festive party popper!  To pop simply hold the popper by the ends and pull.  This is a great way to help celebrate the holidays and is an easy project for even the youngest kids to do.  Did you do this project?  How did it turn out?  Please feel free to post comments and pictures in the comments section.  Happy crafting and happy holidays!
