Creative Crafts for Creative Kids

Archive for January 2011

Snow days, sick days, and school holidays often mean antsy kids stuck inside.  Certainly kids can go outside in the snow but one can only have so many snowball fights before fingers and toes start getting cold.  Beat the boredom with this fun snow day (or any day!) puzzle project.  This is a great project for all ages and skill levels and even makes a great gift!

Things you will need:

  • A piece of white paper
  • A piece of cardboard such as  a cereal box
  • A glue stick
  • A pencil
  • Scissors
  • Markers or crayons
  • Mod Podge or a mixture of equal parts glue and water (optional)
  • A paintbrush (optional)

Step 1: Use your  pencil to draw a picture on the white piece of paper.  Since this is a snow day puzzle I have drawn a snow day scene.  You can draw a picture of anything you like.  Get creative!

Step 2: Use your markers or crayons to color the picture you just drew.

Step 3: Using the glue stick start gluing your picture to the cardboard a small portion at a time, making sure to flatten out any air bubbles.

Step 4: Flip your picture over so the cardboard is facing up.  Using a pencil or marker draw out the lines for the puzzle pieces.  You can make the puzzle harder or easier depending on the number of pieces you decide to draw and cut out.  Once you have drawn the lines cut the pieces out.

Step 5 (optional): Once your puzzle pieces have been cut out you can seal them with Mod Podge or a mixture of equal parts glue and water.  Simply “paint” over the entire puzzle piece including its sides and let dry.  Repeat for additional puzzle pieces.  This step is optional but will prevent the edges of the paper from peeling up off the cardboard.

Congratulations!  You have made a snow day (or any day) puzzle!  This is a great way to keep kids of all ages busy on those unexpected days off.  And even better all of the supplies are things that can already be found around your home.  No need to brave the storm to go to the craft store!  Did you do this project?  How did it turn out?  Please feel free to share comments and pictures in the comments section!  Happy crafting!
