Neat Notebooks

Posted on: March 15, 2012

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (or any day!) with these neat notebooks! Turn a few simple supplies into an adorable notebook for jotting down homework, writing secrets or playing tic-tac-toe. This is an advanced beginner project and would be a fun activity for a rainy day or birthday party.

Things you will need (per notebook):

  • Two foam sheets in the color of your choice
  • 10 index cards (you can use any color or type of paper you like, though I recommend something heavier)
  • One pipe cleaner
  • Peel-and-stick letters (and shapes)
  • Glue
  • A pencil
  • Scissors
  • A hole punch

Step 1: Trace an index card onto each piece of craft foam and cut the pieces out.

Step 2: Punch four holes down the short side of an index card and use this as a template for marking holes on all of the other pieces. Punch all of the holes out. If you cannot use the hole punch on the foam I suggest carefully trying scissors.

Step 3: Sandwich all of the notecards between the foam sheets and use the pipe cleaner to bind the book as shown. After the book is bound you need to trim the ends. Make sure to leave tails that are about one inch long.

Step 4: Take the tail at the top of the notebook and bend it to the back. Next, tuck it under the part of pipe cleaner that was originally pushed through the top hole to the front of the notebook. Wind the pipe cleaner tail like this several times, trim any excess, and tuck the end in so it doesn’t poke you.

Step 5: Take the tail at the bottom of the notebook and push it through the front of the bottom hole to the back. Repeat step four.

Step 6: Decorate the cover of your new notebook with stickers, peel-and-stick letters or shapes and other decorations.

Congratulations! You have made a neat notebook! My notebook is ready for St. Patrick’s Day thanks to the clover cutouts I added. You can customize this project for other holidays or birthdays too. How did your project turn out? Did you do things differently? Please share your comments and photos in the comments section. Happy crafting!
