If you love play dough why not take it one step further by making your own?  This project is like two crafts in one because you get to make your own easy salt dough in the kitchen and finish by painting your dough person later in the craft room!  The original dough recipe can be found here.

Craft.birthday 002Things you will need:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Rolling pin or other play dough tools
  • Gingerbread man cookie cutter
  • Salt (1 cup)
  • Flour (1 cup, may add more)
  • Water (1/2 cup, may add more)
  • Paint or markers

Craft.birthday 003Step 1: Begin by mixing one cup of fine salt and one cup of flour in a mixing bowl. Please note that for the purposes of this demonstration I reduced my proportions.

Craft.birthday 008Step 2: Add half a cup of water to start.

Craft.birthday 010Step 3: Mix or kneed the dough with a spoon or your hands.  Add more water if the dough is too crumbly and add more flour if the dough is too sticky.

Craft.birthday 012Step 4: Once you have a ball of dough roll it out on the table (use wax paper to avoid sticking) and use cookie cutters to cut out people shapes.

Craft.birthday 015Step 5: Once you have your desired shapes cut out let them dry overnight.

Craft.birthday 019Step 6: Once your piece is completely dry brush off any excess flour and use your paint, markers and other decorations to color and decorate your person.

Craft.birthday 022Congratulations!  Now you have a salt dough person.  If you have extra dough you can make an entire family.  If you don’t have a cookie cutter in the shape of a person, try making other shapes instead!  Once your shapes are complete you can glue magnets to the back or glue on popcicle sticks to make puppets.  Did you do this project?  How did it turn out?  Please feel free to post your pictures and comments in the comments section!
